Five Things You Didn't Know About the iPhone

iPhone

The iPhone is arguably the most popular smartphone the world has ever seen, but are you sure you know everything there is to know about it?

Here are five things you might not have known about your iPhone, whether it’s a 4, 4s, 5, 5s, or a 5c…

1. Flash for notifications

Don’t like your ringtone? Want everyone in the room to see your phone light up when you get a junk email? Now you can do it.

Simply go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing > Turn on LED for alerts.

Now whenever you receive a text, email or phone call, your camera’s flash will flicker, just to make sure everyone in the vicinity will know that your phone has something to show you.

Note: Not helpful when trying to sleep…

2. Expand your memory

Do you have too little room on your phone? Do you need some extra space to fit in your latest holiday photos? It might not be the cheapest option but you can store them on the cloud if you’ve used up all of your free space.

This can be done by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Buy More Storage.

You’re given 5GB for free with the handset, but if you’re a hard-core memory user this could help solve your problems, for a price of course.

Apple offers three yearly storage plans: 10GB, 20GB and 50GB for £14.00/year, £28.00/year and £70.00/year respectively.

Just remember to cancel your plan if you no longer need the space or the lovely people at Apple will continue to take your money for a service you might not be using.

3. Add social media to your contacts

Are all of your friends tweeting more than texting? Or are your contacts all stuck with that generic profile picture? This can be altered quickly and easily if you’re a social media buff.

Simply go to Settings > your social media app of choice (e.g. Twitter/Facebook) > Update Contacts.

This will add your contacts’ Twitter handle or Facebook profile picture to their contact on your phone, so if you’re receiving a phone call from a dear friend who happens to have Facebook you will get a chance to see their profile picture instead of a blank background whilst your phone is ringing (or flashing if you liked point number 1!).

Note: You might want to have a look at some of your friends’ profile pictures before going ahead with this one…

4. Hard Reset

This one might sound really simple, but it’s surprising how some people simply don’t know what to do if their iPhone decides to ignore you and freeze up.

All you have to do is hold down the lock button (top right of the phone) simultaneously with the home button (right in the middle at the bottom of the phone) for at least five seconds, until the phone turns off or you see a silver Apple logo appear on the screen.

This will work no matter what app, game or media is running and is a sure fire way to avoid the infuriating freezing if your phone is playing up.

5. Custom Vibrations

Are you tired of the same old generic vibration patter that comes with each notification? No we weren’t either, but there is a way to change the way your phone shudders if it’s something you feel the need to do.

Go to Settings > Sounds > Your chosen alert (e.g. ring tone) > Vibration >Create New Vibration.

You don’t necessarily have to make your own vibration pattern as there are some set ones which are welcome changes to our vibration department. But if you want, you can create your own using the touch screen to choose the length of vibrations etc.

This can also be set to different vibrations for each type of notifications, so you could make your ringtone one long vibration, and your email a simple flash vibration, it’s all up to you.

So hopefully that’s given you an insight into your iPhone, and what you can actually do with it.
