Best 2017 flagship phones

In this mobile phone article we take a look at the best 2017 flagship phones available in the UK.

If you have been searching for the best smartphone overall, then read on as we reveal the best phone out right now, along with its close contenders.

1. Samsung Galaxy S8+

Samsung Galaxy S8+

The Samsung Galaxy S8+ is the best 2017 flagship smartphone, so far. Samsung’s innovation continues as we find an Infinity Display, which is almost bezel-less as the display bends over onto the sides.

The Galaxy S8+ extends the workable area of the display by stripping away parts of the phone body, at the top and the bottom. With just a tiny area of body left, there is no room for the home key and this has been replaced by a virtual home key that only appears when needed.

This elongated display changes the screen’s aspect ratio, which is now 18.5:9. The whopping screen measures 6.2” diagonally and the Quad HD+ resolution gives 529 pixels per inch.

The Samsung Galaxy S8+ brings plenty of convenience with Edge Panel shortcuts, an Always On Display, IP68 certification against water and a new digital assistant named Bixby. Performance is top notch with a 2.3GHz processor with 4GB RAM and a 3,500mAh battery that last longer than almost, but not quite, every other phone on the market.

2. LG G6

LG G6

The LG G6 comes in second in our list of best new smartphones for 2017. Just like the Galaxy S8+, there is less body above and below the screen, which LG has labeled as FullVision. The FullVision Display has an 18:9 aspect ratio and measures 5.7” with Quad HD Plus resolution, giving 564 pixels per inch.

LG has added Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for watching cinematic-quality videos on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Practicality hasn’t been forgotten as we find IP68 certification and specially rounded corners that disperse the force of impacts.

Photography is more interesting with a dual 13MP camera that can zoom out as well as in. We really love the new Snap Shot feature as this lets you review the last shot taken while focusing in on your next shot, in a split screen format.

The performance of the LG G6 is similar to the Galaxy S8+ with a 2.35GHz processor with 4GB RAM and a 3,300mAh battery, that has a special Game Battery Saver, for extended gaming sessions.

3. Huawei P10 Plus

Huawei P10 Plus

The Huawei P10 Plus has a 5.5” display with 540 pixels per inch. Performance is unquestionable with a 2.4GHz processor and 4GB RAM. Huawei has added a little ingenuity here with Ultra Memory machine learning. This reserves part of the memory for the apps you use most, giving them ultra-performance.

However, the Huawei P10 Plus is really for those who want the ultimate photography experience. Huawei has teamed up once again with Leica to bring the Leica Dual Camera 2.0 Pro Edition, which is even more advanced than the camera used on the Huawei P10.

The P10 Plus places a 20MP monochrome camera next to a 12MP RGB (Red, Green, Blue) camera. Together, these produce the Leica style with artistic glow with optical attention paid to the innate brightness and colour of the eyes.

The Huawei P10 Plus has a 8MP Selfie Cam that captures 200% more light and should more people join you for a selfie, then the camera automatically switches to a wide-angle shot. The 3,750mAh battery is the highest capacity of any in our list of the best 2017 flagship phones.

4. HTC U Ultra

HTC U Ultra

The HTC U Ultra is the best flagship phone from HTC and is worthy of its fourth position. The 5.7” Quad HD display brings 513 pixels per inch and just above the main display is a second Dual Display. This gives notifications and other important information, without interrupting the action on the main display.

Performance is driven by a 2.15GHz processor with 4GB RAM and there is an ample 3,000mAh battery. The HTC U Ultra is musically gifted with HTC USonic with 3D Audio and inner ear mapping earphones, while the phone’s HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi edition speakers have separated woofer and tweeter.

The U Ultra has the HTC Sense Companion and an Ultra Selfie camera. This has two modes of operation where you can either take high definition 16MP photos or take an UltraPixel photo where the resolution is reduced in order to capture more light, for supreme nighttime photography.

The HTC U 11 will be announced on the 16th May 2017 and this will bring something new with its Edge Sense feature. Here you can squeeze the phone to make more effortless interactions.
