Upcoming phones of 2014

With MWC just one week away, here's a preview of what we could expect to see in the world of smartphones in 2014...

Samsung Galaxy S5

As we’ve seen over the past few years, Samsung is expected to make a splash at the premium end of the market yet again this year with a selection of two, or perhaps three new devices. One smartphone that’s a given for 2014 is the Samsung Galaxy S5.

We saw the Samsung Galaxy S4 hit our shelves back in March this year, winning swarms of shaky iPhone fans over to Android in one fell swoop.

So what are the rumoured specs for the Samsung Galaxy S5?

  • 16MP camera- an upgrade to the current 13 megapixels on the S4’s rear-facing lens
  • Not one but two S5 devices, one with a metal chassis and another plastic
  • Android 4.4 Kit Kat
  • 2.3GHz quad-core processor with 3GB of RAM (as we’ve seen in the Note 3)

Take a look at all of the Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours here!

iPhone 6

There was lots of speculation about the successor to the iPhone 5, with analysts split for some time over whether we would be seeing the iPhone 5s or the iPhone 6. But with the iPhone 5s having been released this September, everyone knows what’s coming next year.

But what can we expect from the iPhone 6- in other words, what did users want, but not get with the iPhone 5s?

  • In true Samsung and HTC style, would we see an iPhone 6 launched alongside the iPhone 6 Mini and an iPhone 6 XL?
  • iOS 8
  • no home button
  • 4.8-inch display
  • 13MP camera

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

No sooner had the Galaxy Note 3 has been revealed that rumours of the Galaxy Note 4 started appearing online.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The Note 3 still leads the way when it comes to “doing” large-screened phones for business, and despite the competition releasing rival phablets such as the Nokia Lumia 1520 and HTC One Max, we see no reason why Samsung would leave its phablet development at the Note 3.

There hasn’t been quite as much time for leaksters to dig up any gossip about the newest Note device, but these are a few hopes and wishes that are already circulating on the smartphone scene:

  • True wireless charging
  • Aluminium, not plastic, body
  • Eight-core processor

Samsung Galaxy F

Yes, it’s Samsung…again. As if the Korean company hasn’t got enough phablets, smartwatches and tablets lined up for 2014, it has been rumoured that Samsung is planning to fill the ‘gap’ between the S and Note launches by releasing yet another premium device  in the summer of 2014.

It is rumoured that the smartphone will [finally] get rid of the usual plastic shell that we’re used to seeing on Samsung devices, instead opting for the more premium-looking aluminium casing to mimic the iPhone or HTC One.

We have also heard rustlings of a 16MP camera featuring on the Galaxy F, though this could just as easily derive from the same rumour about the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Wearable Technology

Smartphones aside, there are still a number of rumours that we will see Apple and HTC launch their own contributions to the wearable tech trend.

HTC smart watch

News broke just days ago that HTC is set to launch a smartwatch in the second half of 2014, which will aim to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Gear.

HTc smartwatch

As always, we don’t know much about the rumoured device except that it will run Android.

iWatch

Apple, on the other hand, has more or less confirmed that wearable technology is in the making, so we can expect to see a smartwatch, presumably named the iWatch, surface at some point during the year.

Google Gem

We’ve had the controversial Google Glass already this year, so what more weird and wonderful things can we expect to see from Google?

Google Gem: a Google smartwatch destined for 2014?

The Google Gem is Google’s own version of the smartwatch, which should appear at some point in 2014. The smartwatch will allegedly be centred around Google Now, although Google is, for once, keeping schtum about any other details of the device.
