First mobile phone?

A Samsung flip phone, I think it was the E1270? I remember it had Snake, and it felt SO GOOD to finish a phone conversation by slamming it shut. I still miss flip phones - someone bring them back!

Favourite mobile phone?

While I own an iPhone 6, my favourite mobile phone (and my next purchase once this iPhone stops working) is the Fairphone 2. Fairphone is an ethical smartphone manufacturer trying to put an end to the exploitation of workers (many of them children) in mines in Congo where some of the mineral components of smartphones are sourced.

Favourite app?

Instagram! I'm a huge foodie and follow tons of vegan chefs and bloggers - it's the perfect place to find inspiration for my next recipe.

Laurie Calcutt

Laurie Calcutt

A recent graduate in Philosophy and Communications, Laurie developed skills in analysis, marketing and IT. Mobilephones.com's newest content writer has always had a passion for writing, whether it’s light-hearted fiction, or about sport which is a big love of his. You may even see some pop culture references in some of Laurie’s articles too, as even when discussing mobile phones, he can’t resist a little joke!

First mobile phone?

A Sony Ericsson K300i. Lost its charger after about a month and didn’t use the phone again for nearly a year, in the days when we could function without mobiles.

Favourite mobile phone?

Far from the best phone of all time, I can’t help the fond memories I have of my Samsung Galaxy S III. It’s the phone that really started my off on smartphones, and forged my allegiance to team Android. I even dropped it in the bath on two separate occasions and it survived, so it always has a place in heart (and the back of a drawer in my room somewhere).

Favourite app?

I was a bit addicted to QuizUp at university, but now I’d say Yik Yak is a great way to pass the time when you’re waiting at the bus stop, or sat at home bored and want to see what strange things the people in your neighbourhood are willing to put online anonymously.

Misty Michael

Misty Michael

Misty joins us all the way from the USA, originally moving over to complete an MA in English Literature in 2011. She joined Mobilephones.com as the product manager in 2016, and enjoys reading all about the latest mobile gadgets, especially anything Apple related.

First mobile phone?

I'm almost ashamed to admit that it was one of those giant Motorola bag phones. My father bought it for me when he gave me my first car at 14 years old. Back then, in my home state, they actually let you drive at that age!

Favourite mobile phone?

It's definitely the iPhone. I love how it interconnects with my Macbook. If I get a text and my phone is across the room, I can be lazy and reply from my laptop.

Favourite app?

It's Instagram. I run a nail art Instagram account, and I must admit it's really satisfying to post something and start getting loads of likes and comments.

Charlotte Kertrestel

Charlotte KertrestelCharlotte would describe herself as anything but a girly-girl. With a keen interest in writing, Charlotte enjoys creating and responding to the latest news happening in the mobile phone arena. Charlotte offers the site a concise and simplified analysis of mobile phones, targeted at the everyday user rather than just the technical genius.

First mobile phone?

The Motorola M3288. Although it was a hand-me-down from my mum and then my sister, this phone was my pride and joy. It was really only used as an accessory considering none of my friends even owned a mobile phone, and I'm sure it didn't even have any games to play on!

Favourite mobile phone?

I’d have to say that my favourite phone is the iPhone 6s – I used to be a total Android nerd, owning a range of Nexus handsets, but when I started using my iPhone I couldn’t get enough! The camera is really impressive and I love Touch iD to log into my secure apps.

Favourite app?

My favourite app at the moment has got to be Spotify. I’ve recently upgraded to Spotify Premium and I can’t stop downloading playlists to listen to in the car.

Michael Brown

Author Michael BrownWith over two decades of experience in the telecommunications sector, Michael has seen everything from the birth of the digital mobile phone and the introduction of text messaging through to the social media craze of taking a selfie on your smartphone.

With an expert eye and a wisdom of more than my years, I can’t help sharing my opinion. My favourite medium is Google+ where I connect with anyone interested in technology and I simply love to discuss the latest mobile phones.

If you want to voice your opinion or simply want to hear the latest news first, then I encourage you to visit my Google+ page!

First mobile phone?

It makes me feel very old to say that my first mobile phone was the Nokia 1011. Haven't heard of it? Well it was the very first mass produced GSM phone released in 1992. It weighed a ton, was the size of a brick and I was almost glad when it was stolen!

Favourite mobile phone?

I simply cannot answer this! My favourite phone is usually whatever has been just released. I will however say that I like the unusual so don’t be surprised if you see me with a LG, Huawei or Sony phone in the future.

Favourite app?

My favourite app is Kingsoft Office. If you don’t have Microsoft’s Word or Excel then this is a great free alternative and it keeps everything in the same format. This means you can open, edit and save Microsoft files and share them between your phone and a Windows PC.

Carmel BrownWorking within the mobile phone sector for over a decade, Carmel is one of the industry's most experienced and knowledgeable writers. Many visitors of the Mobilephones.com website love Carmel’s authorship style as she offers a low-jargon opinion that encourages the conversation from low, mid and high-end mobile phone users.

First mobile phone?

My first mobile phone was the NEC DB2000 - everyone had a Nokia and I just had to be different. Released in 1999 this handset is still in the family with my grandparents using the phone to this day.

Favourite mobile phone?

Just one? The first 3G Sharp phone from Vodafone was in its day my favourite handset. It was the first handset to offer video calling and as we were one of the first ones to get it the only people my husband and I could video call was each other. From today's handsets I would have to choose the Samsung Galaxy S6, I am an Android fan and absolutely love all the innovations that Samsung put into their phones.

Favourite app?

Google Maps, ask anyone and they will tell you I have the most awful sense of direction and can get lost anywhere! This app has helped me countless times.
