Buying an iPhone is never going to be a cheap expedition, with flagship specs and features not coming as too much of a bargain. On top of this, Apple also tends to throw in some added cost for the brand name, so your bank account better be braced for a big dent if you do choose to make a purchase.

Apple has been remarkably kind this time around though, giving the 6s and the 6s Plus the same price tag as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus when they were launched. You'll be able to pick it up directly from Apple or through a retailer elsewhere, so if you're after a contract deal it could pay to shop around.

Of course, deals will vary depending on how much storage you choose on the new iPhone handset, as it will with different networks, so contract deals will vary.

The iPhone 6s might not look all that different to the iPhone 6, but it definitely separates itself when it comes down to the features you'll be able to play with on the new handset.

Screens a Plenty

The iPhone 6s packs the same size screen as the iPhone 6 at 4.7”, however it’s not the only new smartphone to make an appearance, with the iPhone 6s Plus also coming along for the ride, meaning that another 5.5” display has also joined in.

Also, with strengthened glass, the screens are less liable to scratch or shatter if dropped.

3D Touch

A feature similar to Force Touch on the Apple Watch, 3D Touch can actually figure out how hard you press on the display to help differentiate between functions.

With the iPhone 6s this allows you to get a glimpse of emails or messages without opening up a whole new menu. It also allows you to access quick shortcuts and other features, all with a subtle tap of the display.

Touch ID

It’s been around since the days of the iPhone 5s and there’s no sign of it doing a runner just yet. In fact, Apple has upgraded it to a brand new level on the iPhone 6s, making it twice as fast as on the iPhone 6.

This means that you can pay for goods with Apple Pay quicker than before and gain access to your locked device at a faster clip as well.

Live Photos

With an upgraded camera duo on the iPhone 6s, Live Photos also bring an interesting element to your photos by recording a video of before and after the shot.

This can then be played back for a video glimpse of the picture as well, and is activated by default meaning you won't need to go through the effort of setting it up.

Specs & new features

The iPhone 6s is obviously the most powerful iPhone yet, and proves this with its spec sheet. Staking claim to a brand new Apple A9 chipset and M9 co-processor, it measures up nearly twice as fast as the iPhone 6, whilst also proving more efficient - which should save your battery.

The 12 megapixel iSight camera is another obvious improvement, whilst the 1.2 megapixel FaceTime lens on the iPhone 6 has now grown to a full 5 megapixels.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6s

As with all new smartphones, the immediate area of comparison comes against its preceding handset – in this case the iPhone 6.

The design of both phones is near-identical, as is the case with most S upgrades from the Cupertino company. In fact, most of the changes are under the hood, affecting performance much more than the looks of the phone.

The camera has been boosted as we've already mentioned, whilst the A9 chipset is also a solid addition, whilst the extra-strong aluminium build is also something to be proud of.

Are you ready for the iPhone 7? Rumours have started already with the surprise release of the iPhone SE smartphone, the normal announcement of the new flagship handset comes in September 2016.

Best Networks

Apple is no longer linked to O2 like it was several years ago, so the iPhone 6s will be available to almost any network provider under the sun.

Typically EE tends to be the best for 4G service, whilst O2 offers the much-loved priority scheme if you’re after better deals to exclusive events. Other networks like Vodafone and Three also have their individual perks, but in general your network choice won’t be altering the way you use the iPhone 6s too much.

Getting an iPhone 6s for free up front on contract

Getting an iPhone with no upfront cost can turn into quite a costly endeavour, especially right after launch, but if you’re desperate to not pay anything up front there will be some deals available to you.

You’re likely to be paying upward of £45/month should you insist on spending nothing right away, although adding an upfront price could save you money in the long run.

If you already have an older handset and are not ready to upgrade yet, save money with contract SIM card deals - that's it just the SIM without a handset.
