Sony Xperia E3 review
Supreme value for money
If you are looking for a smartphone that offers supreme value for money then you have just stumbled across a hidden gem in a cluttered marketplace of mediocre budget phones.
Today you can buy a slice of Sony quality and design at an affordable price, so read on to discover more in my Sony Xperia E3 review.
Designed for easy one-handed use, the Xperia E3 has a moderately sized 4.5” IPS display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. This provides a great viewing experience that will not deteriorate over time thanks to scratch resistant durable tempered glass.
The build quality is further displayed by textured corners that have been crafted for extra resilience and engineered to prevent dents. You even get a slice a premium with an aluminium power button!
Internally a quad-core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GB RAM powers the experience both on and offline and the 4GB memory can be boosted with a 32GB memory card should Cloud storage not suit your needs.
The biggest sacrifice when purchasing a budget or mid-range smartphone is usually size but the Sony Xperia E3 isn’t chunky at all at 8.5mm thick and weighing only 144g this smartphone is lighter than most high-end phones.
Phone Set Up
The Sony Xperia E3 setup is no chore with the familiar Android KitKat v4.4 operating system delivering a wide selection of Google services. It is a good idea at this point to check out the Sony Personal Content Station where you can backup your photos and videos.
One-touch connectivity tackles most other setup scenarios and this includes connecting to your Smartwear, mirroring you screen onto a TV or playing you music over NFC enabled speakers.
The Sony Xperia E3 features 4G internet browsing so you can have the ultimate online experience even when you are away from your home / work Wi-Fi. GPS is also available, letting you geo-tag your photos, share your location with friends or navigate with turn-by-turn assistance.
If you love your music then Sony’s superior experience in this field shows through with the inclusion of ClearAudio+, the xLoud Experience and Surround Sound Technology.
Should you happen to be looking for something that other smartphones don’t have then you really should get your fill at the Xperia Lounge. Here you will find exclusive competitions, offers, product giveaways and behind the scenes videos.
Tailored for music, sports, film and gaming fans, 2014 delivered 130 Xperia Lounge winners who traveled abroad to see their idols in locations like LA and Paris in addition to sports fans winning trips to the FIFA World Cup Final.
Camera & Video
The Sony Xperia E3 camera with a 5MP resolution fits in well to its pricing bracket but it is the camera features that really make it stand out from the crowd.
The Quick Launch app lets you open the camera with a single twist of the wrist and you are rewarded with features like Social Live where you can broadcast your videos in real-time via Facebook and see your friends responses while you film.
To ensure better odds of capturing a masterpiece, Auto Scene recognition automatically senses and selects one of the 36 scene modes, which include everything from macro photos to illuminated night scenes. HDR is also turned on and off by the Auto Scene feature so multiple shots can be taken and merged at different exposures when needed.
The 5 megapixel camera of the Xperia E3 also has 4x smooth zoom, Timeshift Burst where 31 frames at captured in 2 seconds and AR Fun where you can draw on or add animations to your photos.
High-definition video can be recording at 1080p, there is a front facing secondary camera for selfies and video calls and new camera apps can be downloaded as they are released to ensure you don’t miss out on future camera tricks that are developed.
The 2,330mAh battery should provide 2 days of use under a mixed usage scenario and this is pretty good at a time when most smartphones can only manage 1 day. This is achieved by powering up and down individual cores of the asynchronous processor.
The Battery Stamina Mode can preserve your power further but even under normal circumstances your can watch over 7 hours of video playback or listen to your music for up to 49 hours before the battery needs recharging.
Verdict: The Sony Xperia E3 puts some of the best Sony elements in the palm of your hand and is sensibly priced. You shouldn’t hesitate in snapping one up if you are budget conscious yet still want an entertaining smartphone.
